Cyclone Biparjoy Live Updates: Over 74,000 Evacuated, Heavy Rain In Gujarat

With cyclone 'Biparjoy' likely to make landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat's Kutch district on Thursday, the state administration has shifted more than 74,000 people living near the coast as a precaution and deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures, said officials on Wednesday.

With the cyclone in the Arabian Sea barrelling towards the Gujarat coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, the Met department said.

This will be the second cyclone to hit the state in two years after 'Tauktae' in May 2021.

Cyclone Biparjoy | Cyclone Biparjoy Expected To Make Landfall Between 4-8 PM In Gujarat

Cyclone Biparjoy is less than 200 kms from the Gujarat coast. It will cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port between 4-8 PM, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The administration has shifted people from nearly 120 villages located between zero and 10 km from the seashore in Kutch district.  

Ground Report: Strong Winds In Gujarat As Cyclone Biparjoy Approaches

With cyclone Biparjoy less than 200 kms from the coast of Gujarat, Kachchh's Mandvi is witnessing rough sea conditions and strong winds. Classified as a "very severe cyclonic storm" of category 3, Biparjoy is expected to cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port between 4-8 PM, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Rough Sea In Mumbai, High Tides Expected

Rough sea waves were seen at the Gateway of India as cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall in Gujarat on Thursday.

Biparjoy is expected to make landfall near the Jakhau coast, Gujarat in the evening and will traverse all along the Rann of Kutch up to Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, high tide is also expected in Mumbai at 10:29 am, Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai said.

"VSCS Biparjoy over Northeast Arabian Sea at 0530 hours IST of 15th June, 2023 about 180km west-southwest of Jakhau Port (Gujarat). To cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by evening of 15th June as a VSVS," Tweeted IMD.

Indian Navy On Standby For Cyclone Biparjoy

The Indian Navy is on standby for Cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to make landfall in Gujarat today. The Navy has four ships with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) bricks embarked, as well as five relief teams each at Porbandar and Okha, and 15 relief teams at Valsura.

Helicopters at INS Hansa in Goa and INS Shikra in Mumbai are also ready to be deployed, and P8i and Dornier aircraft from INS Hansa are on standby for aerial reconnaissance and transportation of relief material and personnel. Additional HADR stores and equipment are also being kept on standby.

The Headquarters of Western Naval Command (HQWNC) and area headquarters are maintaining close liaison with the state government and civil authorities to ensure that the Navy is able to provide assistance in the event of any contingency.

Rough Sea Conditions, Strong Winds In Mandvi

As Cyclone Biparjoy has hit several parts of Gujarat, Kachchh's Mandvi, on Thursday, witnessed rough sea conditions and strong winds.

Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department, on Sunday, gave a cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat.

The department issued the alert: "Cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coast: Yellow message, ESCS BIPARJOY over East-central Arabian sea, at 1730 IST of 11th June near lat 18.6E and long 67.7E, likely to cross between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) by noon of 15th June."

Dwarkadhish Temple In Gujarat To Remain Closed

As cyclone 'Biparjoy' approaches the coastal region of Gujarat, Dwarkadhish Temple in Devbhumi Dwarka is closed for devotees on Thursday.

Along with the Dwarkadhish Temple, the Dwarka Bazaar will also remain closed.

However, the temple routine will continue as it is. There will be morning pooja, bhog and aarti during the daytime and the live darshan is accessible through the Dwarkadhish Temple official website and will continue throughout the day, said Malay Pandya, priest of Dwarkadhish Temple.

Border Security Force Steps Up Cyclone Preparedness

In the wake of cyclone 'Biparjoy' approaching Gujarat's coastal areas, Border Security Force (BSF) has made adequate preparations to combat any challenges arising out of the impending storm.

The Inspector General of BSF Gujarat, Ravi Gandhi visited the coastal areas of Bhuj and took stock of the preparedness to deal with any situation.
